Question about upgrading shifters and crankset (compatibility)?
I recently was given a scott frame and some old components to build a bike, so right now my bike has the following:
Crankset --Truvativ TOURO C 2.1, 50/34 compact
Bottom bracket--Truvativ 07BB
Shifters--Shimano Tiagra
Front derailleur--Shimano Tiagra
Rear derailleur --Shimano 105
Rear cogs--SRAM PG-950, 11-28, 9-speed
Number of gears 18
Brake type--Rim brake
Brakes--Scott Pro SCBR-520
Brake levers--Shimano Tiagra
I am wanting to upgrade a couple parts but I am not sure about compatibility, I can currently get a really great deal on brand new, Ultegra ST-6700 Shifters double 10 sp, and also a great deal on Shimano 105 5750 Double 50/34 Crankset, 175mm, I am not good with maintenance on bike what so ever so I am not sure if I could but these two parts on my bike and they be compatible, would I have to purchase anything else to make them compatible, such as a new cassette or derailleurs. Any advice I would greatly appreciate, and thank you in advance.
To keep it simple:
Crankset - Do not worry about the 'speed', you can use any 9/10/11 speed crankset with any 9/10/11 speed read end. You can use any brand including Campagnolo.
Rear End - You have to make sure the shifters, chain and casette are all of the same speed and make sure the Shifters and Mechs are of the same brand. (you cant use a SRAM shifter with a Shimano Mech). Campagnolo is a completely different ball game, but if you stick to Shimano/SRAM this rule applies.
If I were you I would not waste you money upgrading the shifters/mechs, as the end result will just be marginally better shifting. A better crank will be stiffer and therefore transfer the power better. I'd spend the rest of any upgrade money you have on better wheels/tyres as they will make the more performance difference.
