Un-removable titanium... safe for MRI?
I recently got my targus pierced and the ring is titanium.. I could remove it with a pliers and loads of pain... but I would rather not. Will titanium effect the MRI or magnetize in some odd way and rip out or something scary like that? (Never had an mri if you couldn't tell)
There are several variants to your question. If it is titanium it will not be pulled out. The problems that could arise is that being a ring it could possible carry a current induced by the magnetic field. If a current sets up it could cause a serious burn. I had one nurse who stayed in the room to comfort her patient in the scan who did receive a slight burn to her belly button area from a ring. The other problem is if the area being scanned is in the area of the ring it will cause a large artifact in the area causing the anatomy to be obscured and may loss information. Most techs would not even start a exam with removable metal in the area of interest and yes a piercing is considered removable. If we are scan say a knee, we would be more likely to try the scan and give you a panic button in case of heating. If the scan is off your brain, you will need to remove it. Some scanners will make you remove all metal prior to the scan requardless. The stronger 3T magnets can cause more problems than a 1.5T or a .7T magnet.
