Estimated baby weight 11lbs 8oz!! HELP?
Hi guys, I had a private scan done yesterday and my baby is measuring big I am 25 weeks, at my routine scan at 20 weeks the measurements were off the scale 2. They have advised that they wont be changing my due dates. After yesterdays appointment im soo scared - I have also been diagnosed with SPD & twisted pelvis so carrying a large baby is agony.
11lbs 8oz baby is massive and surely I wont be able to have a natural birth? I spoke to my midwife this morning who has said the earliest she can see me is next week to have a talk through my worries but she said that they probably wouldnt look at allowing me to have an elective c-section?? I am sooo nervous now I dont think I can give birth naturally! On top of that ive been told that I have an anterior low placenta - can anyone give me some on advice on what to expect im a first time mum! x
I can totally sympathise with SPD, i suffered with it, albeit only mildly during my pregnancy.
Firstly the anterior low placenta - this should not make any difference to the birth, it means the placenta is low but to the front of the uterus, the only difference it makes is it can be more difficult to hear the heartbeat. It would only be a problem if you have placenta previa (which is what I had) where the placenta is lying at the bottom of the uterus and therefore a natural birth would not be possible. Even with those diagnose with placenta previa early in pregnancy the placenta can move slightly during pregnancy which enables a natural birth.
My niece was born weighing 11lbs 6oz and she had a natural birth although it definately was not easy and had they actually known the size she would have been offered a c-section (she did not have her final scan).
You can't in the UK just elect to have a c-section there is a criteria of when they will be performed, in your case the only reason for a c-section would be if it has been found that it is highly unlikely that your baby will fit through the normal birth canal for instance, an X-ray or scan may have shown that your baby's head is larger than the space in the pelvis through which it needs to travel; or that your baby is in an abnormal position inside the womb meaning it is unlikely to fit through the birth canal, therefore the hospital will make sure that a natural birth is possible .They would not risk otherwise, however you need to discuss with your midwife what effect SPD will have on your pregnancy - especially with the expected size of your baby - insist on scans and get the reassurance you need to ensure your pelvis will not be damaged during a natural labour.

I had a c-section (I had placenta previa) and so I can understand the warnings that it is not the easy option - it is major abdominal surgery which can take up to 6 months to feel "normal" again - there are risks with each subsequent pregnancy and I found it very difficult to bond well with my baby as I could not even pick her up and was heavily reliant on my partner. I know every womans experience is different, but for me personally the c-section itself was not easy, was VERY traumatic and I was given additional sedation during it (I nearly told them to give me a general it was soo bad) afterwards was not good if you are an independant person.
However - I believe there is a place for them and one of them is if there is a risk to your subsequent health - you need to discuss with your midwife and / or consultant to make sure you are happy with the birth method and this may be just a case of proving a natural birth is necessary, but this is your body and your baby and ask and ask and ask everything you need to, to make sure you ARE happy.
