Freewheels New & Old?
I just purchased a IRD 13-28 7 speed Freewheel to replace my 1983 Shimano MF-Z012 14-28 6 speed Freewheel. and the first thing i notice is how shallow the teeth are cut. So i go to the web and look for pictures of newer Shimano Freewheels and they look the same as the IRD. They look like the lower 1/3 of a circle. On my old MF-Z012 they look like deep 1/2 circles with teeth that fit tighter in the chain (front to back). The teeth on the new Freewheel only stick up approx 3/4 not all the way. With the teeth cut so shallow you can rock the freewheel back and forth a small amount, as the chain wants to ride up on the teeth. It looks to me like they want new Freewheels to where out fast. My old Freewheel teeth with 10,000+ miles look better than the teeth on newer freewheels.

Newer freewheels are designed to shift better, the way the teeth are cut enable the chain to move from cog to cog much better. If you dd not replace your chain at the same time as the freewheel, the chain and freewheel will not fit together. Make sure to buy a chain for 7 speed freewheels to ensure proper fit.
