Changing tires for 700c hybrid bicycle for gravel and mild offroad, some dirt, Im told that semi??
slick tires, dont need knobs and bumps bc the tire width is to thin. Is this true bc Ive heard of Cyclocross tires and they even have a semi knobbly or knobbly tread and they are thinner than my tires? They tried to sell me Maxxis overdrive bc it had kevlar and good grip, yet he said a Duro Explorer tire with knobs on side wasn't that good bc it was 700 x 35 and too narrow to make a difference. Are they pulling my leg and trying to sell me any old crap? My current tires widths are 700c x 38 and kenda kwest slicks

The person who was telling you narrow tires don't need or shouldn't have knobbie treads doesn't appear to know what he/she is talking about. There is absolutely nothing wrong with knobbie treads on a narrow tire.
Most cyclocross tires range in width from about 28-35mm and have knobby tread designs. Cyclocross courses are usually a mix of dirt, mud, grass, gravel and an occasional sidewalk. Because they are narrow, these tires require fairly high pressure to prevent pinch flats, so ride quality is pretty harsh. Quite frankly, you feel every bump in the road. For more technical, rooty, rocky single track type trails, you really want a wider, lower pressure tire. Also, knobbie treads, on any width tire, generate a lot of drag on concrete or asphalt. However, if you want to fly on mild off road surfaces, narrow, knobbie cyclocross tires are the ticket.
A semi-slick tread design is a nice compromise between a road tire like your Kenda Kwest and a true knobbie. For straight down the road riding, a semi-slick has lower rolling resistance than a knobbie. When cornering on loose surfaces, it has the side knobs to provide grip. You may want to try some Kenda Kwick tires as an alternative to the Kenda Kwest. If you find you are doing too much sliding on gravel and dirt surfaces, your next step is to try a full knobbie design.
